The Contemporary Visual Culture
of Fleeting Popularity

The Contemporary Visual Culture of Fleeting Popularity contains a collection of products from 1990 to 2015, which are small-scale, ephemeral and even ridiculous. They suggest how graphic design (including advertising, publishing and memes as medium) engages, promotes and collides with the commercial culture in contemporary Chinese society. Observing these objects, the visual message they convey is not only one of personal nostalgia but of an ambivalent relationship between the public and its visual culture, which constantly depicts fantasies of excess. These fantasies are constant and never go away, which is ironic considering that what they offer is not really necessary for everyday life.

Inspired by the series of snacks from Want Want, a food manufacturer based in Taiwan, I made an animated piece integrating with the hilarious elements from its last twenty years' commercials. The animation portrays the character in the logo traveling through the products with different outfits.

A Report on the Language of Life

Photography: Caihui Chen
Design: Yize Wang

A Report on the Language of Life is a visual dictionary that collects Chinese Internet slang from short vitality to commonly-used in recent years. Inspired by the examples of portmanteaus, a specific form of neologism, words are blended to make a new term that combines their meanings and maintains the direct translation from Chinese. The photographs are taken by Caihui Chen, which records the trifles she saw every day in Shanghai as the main agenda. Therefore, the slang been collected heavily depends on the designer’s perception from social media, but the images are based on the photographer’s actual scene in life. As a result, an ambivalent relationship between the definition of the slang and its visual is made, both related to each other and creating a paradox. The accumulation of the massive items shown in the photo and the reflection from these Internet slang suggests how daily life is commoditized; on the other hand, these slang don’t necessarily completely become the pop culture we usually see and what we experience are not necessarily the slang themselves.

The Facade of Immersive Massiveness
‘Conversation’

This conversation includes the visualizations of the dialogue between different people in the art-related industry and myself, discussing the commercial culture of young generations from their personal experience. The subject mentioned varies from several small-scale products of subcultures to common phenomena on social media and how they both engage and conflict with the overwhelming consumption of everything. Though based on the specific context, there is a similar vibe of the hyper-scale Consumerism in the worldwide background.

Baji

Based on the concept of empathy, I created a project named Baji, which refers to the sound when people are eating something in a humorous way. The project began with the researches and interviews about how people reconcile negative feelings in everyday life, and from the process I found a direct relationship between different types of food and the adjustments of bad moods. Baji was born as a result. It combines the sense of happiness people get from food in the form of daily supplies and develops into a series of products which suggest an intriguing way of releasing stress and having fun.
